New 2017 Kia Sportage

2017 Kia Sportage Overview

New/Notable:
  • Redesigned for 2017
  • Available all-wheel drive
  • 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine for SX Turbo trim
The 2017 Kia Sportage is a compact SUV that has been redesigned for 2017. The wheelbase has increased by 1.2-inches to 105.1-inches, while its overall length has stretched by 1.6-inches to 176.4-inches. It competes with the Ford Escape, Mazda CX-3, and Toyota RAV4. Three trims are available: the LX, EX, and SX Turbo.

The Sportage underwent an alien-like transformation that bears little resemblance to its predecessor. The headlights have been reshaped to look like frog eyes, and they are mounted high along the hood. The lower half of the frontend features an odd ensemble of shapes. Kia’s signature honeycomb grille returns for another iteration, while the fascia has pillow-shaped air vents. The rear of the Sportage also has organic-shaped taillights and a channel-grooved liftgate. Optional features include a trailer hitch receiver, heated side mirrors, turn signal indicators, a power moonroof, a power liftgate, and fog lights.

Under the hood, the LX and EX trims are powered by a standard 181-hp, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and front- (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The SX Turbo trim has a 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, horsepower slightly decreases to 237-hp with AWD. Fuel economy for the 2.4-liter/FWD model is an EPA-estimated 22/29 mpg city/highway. With AWD, the rating dips to 21/25 mpg. The turbocharged 2.0-liter/FWD model has a 21/26 mpg rating. That rating drops to 20/23 mpg with AWD.

Inside, the Sportage has a driver-centric cockpit, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and ribbed-paneled cloth seats. Maximum rear cargo capacity is 30.7 cubic feet. The center console features a standard audio system, which includes a 5-inch touchscreen, CD/MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB port. It can be upgraded to a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, satellite radio, Android Auto compatibility (and later, Apple CarPlay), and a Harmon Kardon premium audio system. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows/locks, remote keyless entry, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Leather-trim seats, power/heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, an automatic dimming mirror, and LED interior lighting are also available.

The Sportage was named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Standard safety features include a backup camera and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Park assist, a blindspot warning system, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are available as well.
